The Ras Al Khaimah Animal Welfare Centre (RAK AWC) is an animal sanctuary funded by the Government of Ras Al Khaimah, with the patronage of His Highness, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.
The RAK AWC was opened in 2010. It is located in the Al Qusaidat district of Ras Al Khaimah. The shelter contains of dog habitat building with 28 rooms and cat habitat building with 15 rooms. Additionally, animal housing includes small outdoor areas, such as an outdoor dog run, where all the dogs are able to run off-leash, socialise and enjoy life as a dog. The facility also consists of the administration building with an office, clinic, pet shop and an adoption room, in which animals and their potential future owners have time and space to get to know each other.
The shelter was the idea of Melissa Davis and progressed to a stage where an experienced veterinarian Dr Terri Hutchinson was recruited in October 2010. Since this time, the shelter manager Ellen Quanjer, the new veterinarian Chenjerai Sigauke, a few employees and many volunteers, are helping the shelter to grow into a centre of excellence where the stray and domestic animals of Ras Al Khaimah can receive all necessary care.
Our mission is to help all of the animals of Ras Al Khaimah.
We do this by:
- finding suitable homes for as many abandoned or tame dogs and cats as possible
- humanely trapping, sterilizing, and releasing feral cats and village dogs to reduce the population living on the streets
- providing Ras al Khaimah with a Cattery Service, a Veterinary Clinic and a Pet Retail Store that serve as revenue-generating components for the project
- providing medical treatment for injured animals, to both stray and pet animals
- humanely euthanizing animals (cats, dogs, donkeys, camels, goats, etc) that are severely ill or injured.
- promoting responsibility in pet ownership (spay/neuter/vaccinate/microchip/register)
- educating the public about the Animal Welfare Law and implement it in the community
- increasing public awareness of animal issues through school and community events
We're not setting a minimum fundraising target, just do your best, any money you raise will be used to help the animals on the streets of Ras Al Khaimah, even a small amount can make a big difference. We hope to provide you with a RAWC running shirt, or a RAWC bib to wear over your own favourite running kit. We'll be there on the day with some of our best behaved animals to bark and meow you on, so you'll easily be able to spot us! If you'd like to support us, but don't think your legs will carry you around the full half marathon route, get a team together and have some fun running 5k each, it's not as hard as you might think! This is a great opportunity to support a local charity in Ras Al Khaimah, so get your own two legs moving in support of our four legged friends!
